Standard Questions

We often get "standard" questions, which can be resolved by reading this page. Please try the techniques suggested. If you still have a problem, please tell us (remind us that you've already read this FAQ message) and we'll get back to you.

Getting to http://www.homepublish.com

Do not use a search engine such as Yahoo to go to any Web address if you already have the Web address or URL. Use the browser's own address field which is near the top of the screen.

Most browsers, e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape automatically boot up a webpage first. For many people this is Yahoo. Yahoo is not a search engine. It is a site register. Sites have to be registered with Yahoo and they are entered manually. As such, registration with Yahoo can take months.

If you have a Web address (http://www.webaddress.com, etc) then use the browser's own address field to get to the site. This is what browsers do. The browser's address field is usually below the tool bar near the top of the page.

Downloading Our FREE Part One Manual

Go to our FREE Publications download page… Read the script. Half way down the script you are invited to click a file called test.pdf. Click this. If you can read the message then it means that you have a correct version of Adobe Acrobat Reader on your hard drive.

Please note that our files have been prepared using ADOBE ACROBAT VERSION 4. YOU WILL NEED ACROBAT READER VERSION 4 OR HIGHER. Earlier versions of Acrobat Reader may not colour-scan correctly or have blank pages. If test.pdf does not work, or
your version of the reader is version 3 or less, then go directly to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html and follow the instructions to download.

Acrobat Reader is being used more and more. Most software manuals are now on CD using Adobe, so it would be wise to get a copy. It's FREE.

Click the blue hyperlink "Click here to download…" A file called manual.exe will now start to download.

The file manual.exe is an executable zip file. A Zip file is a standard document that has been compressed using a program
called WinZip. Compressed documents are smaller than their originals and don't take as long to download.

You may need WinZip to uncompress the document. Nearly all computers have WinZip but if not, go to http://www.winzip.com and download a FREE trial copy.

Imagine that the file manual.exe is an envelope. Inside this envelope is a letter called Revbook1.pdf, which is what you want to read. It is a two-stage process. The first part is to receive the envelope, the second is to open it and read the letter.

As the file, manual.exe, downloads you will be asked where to put it on your computer. We suggest your Desktop, as this is easy to find. When the download is complete you will find this file on your desktop. This means your "envelope" has been delivered. Now you have to open it.

Double click this file and a box called WinZip Self Extractor will appear telling you where the "letter" file inside it (called Revbook1.pdf) will be stored on your computer. By default it will go to your Windows temp directory OR your My Documents directory. The box will tell you. You can alter the destination by simply altering the path in the box. Now click UNZIP and the letter file Revbook1.pdf will be uncompressed and sent to the relevant directory. This takes only seconds. When complete you can click CLOSE.

Now go to the directory C\windows\temp and look for the file Revbook1.pdf. Alternatively click START>FIND>FILES OR FOLDERS and search for Revbook1.pdf.

When you get to this file double-click it and Acrobat Reader will boot up automatically revealing the "Part One" manual. No password is needed for this book.

The process is the same for the FREE preview of "Book Two". In this case, the filename that will be unzipped is called Revbook2preview.pdf.

If You Use an Apple Mac…

... and test.pdf works successfully when you try it, then notice that we have added two new ways of downloading the example newsletter and session one manual. If you go to our FREE Publications download page and click the links marked Click here to download… (PDF Newsletter or PDF Manual), the items will boot up Acrobat Reader immediately and you will see them on screen. Now click the Save icon on the Acrobat Reader tool bar (NOT the browser tool bar). You will know if it's the correct icon when it prompts you to type in a filename before saving it to your disk. The prompt will say *.pdf (note it reads pdf, not html).

This system is slightly longer but avoids using WinZip, which won't work with Mac computers.

Problems with Adobe

There isn't a software package known to man that doesn't have bugs in it and Adobe is no exception. Adobe works fine on 99% of computers. Problems have been encountered on machines running Epson printer drivers, and also some machines that already have Adobe Distiller installed. In such circumstances, buyers can get printouts direct from us at cost price of printing, packing and posting (£5.00 per 60 page set).

Error Message "Could not find the colorspace named Cs8"

According to Adobe's own support section, this error message only appears when trying to view certain pdf files using Acrobat Reader version 2. Check which version of Adobe Acrobat Reader you are using and upgrade to the latest version by going to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Blank pictures and/or warnings about "colour separation CS8" are usually caused by using an older version of Acrobat Reader, rather than version four.

This should cure the problem. If not, it means your system has problems with the current version of Acrobat Reader and/or there is a clash with the printer set-up. You may need to opt for the hard copy version.

Email Downloads of .pdf and .exe Files

Email was designed to send text, which traditionally uses MIME to code. Most email programs do not search the file type with the result that binary files, such as used by .exe (executable files) and .pdf (portable document format files) are wrongly decoded and do not work as a consequence. This can often be hidden by using a zip file but the best way of transferring any .pdf or .exe file is by downloading direct from a website, or by FTP.

Problems Printing PDF Files

Sometimes, files prepared as Adobe PDF files don't print properly on your printer. For more information, go to http://www.adobe.com/support/readguide.html

PDF FAQs

What's a PDF File?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. In the same way that a document created in Microsoft Word looks like - mybook.DOC - a PDF file has the form - mybook.PDF.

A PDF file is created by a program called Adobe Acrobat. To view any PDF file you need a special software program called Adobe Acrobat Reader. Provided this software is installed on your computer, you can see any PDF file just by double-clicking the filename in Windows Explorer.

It is quite probable that you already have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer because it has become an industry standard. Most software programs no longer have a printed manual. Instead, the manual is on the same CD as the software. The manuals are invariably written in PDF and the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader program is included on the CD. Acrobat Reader often self-installs with the other software.

The easiest way to check whether you already have Adobe Acrobat Reader is by clicking the following link: test.pdf. If you can read the message then you don't need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader. If clicking the link does nothing, or you cannot read the PDF file, then follow the instructions for installing Adobe Acrobat Reader below.

If test.pdf doesn't work, download Adobe Acrobat Reader. It's FREE.

To get the latest version of Acrobat Reader go directly to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

Tip: This is a large download (8.6 Mb), so morning is the best time to do it, when the Web is quiet.

Why Use a PDF File When a Word Document Will Do?

To read a document in MS Word you will need the same program and the same version or higher. A document created in Word 2000 will not open if you are using Word version 6. Nor will it, if you have an Apple Mac computer. Text fonts will change, so will page breaks. A PDF file reproduces itself perfectly every time, on any computer.

Do PDF Files Take a Long Time to Download?

  1. The size, in kilobytes or Megabytes, of the file you are downloading

We have tried to make the maximum file size of the eBooks on this site approximately 1.5 Meg. When eBooks are larger we try to split them into parts, so you can view part one, then download part two when you are ready.

  2. The time of day

This varies tremendously according to your location and time zone. You should test the best download times in your location at various times. Generally speaking, early morning is best, simply because 10 million kids are in snoozeville and not staring at Pamela Anderson's buffer zones in cyberspace.

  3. Your modem

Most modern modems have been running at 56K for several years. If you at still down at 33K or less - Upgrade!

  4. Your computer

For all Internet surfing you really need a good computer. For economy buy a tower computer and just upgrade the motherboard every 18 months or so. This is far cheaper than buying the latest Pentium, particularly if you keep one generation behind the state of the art machines. RAM is important. Get lots of it.

  5. Your ISP

If you have a cheap, or free ISP you will get what you pay for. If choosing an ISP, take note of the bandwidth. The best way to understand bandwidth is to think of all the calls going into an ISP like water pouring into a funnel. The spout of the funnel is the bandwidth. If the spout is too small, then water will back up the funnel causing delays.

  6. Your telephone network

If it's busy, everything slows down. As a very rough guide only, it takes about 2.5 minutes to download 1 Meg of information.

What Happens When You Click a PDF File Link?

When you click a link to a PDF file, the first thing that happens is either nothing at all (your arrow cursor changes to an egg-timer) OR your copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader boots up inside your browser.

The reason why nothing seems to be happening is that it takes time to download the file before Adobe Acrobat Reader can bring up the first page. Unfortunately, as nothing happens to your screen during the download, it's easy to assume your computer has locked up. The larger the PDF file, the longer it takes to load up. If you want to see a progress report we suggest you double click the two-computer icon on the bottom right hand side of your screen:

Then a larger box will appear showing you the speed of transfer. If the number of bytes received or sent doesn't change within two minutes then you may have locked up.

How Best Can I Read the Books?

We've set up the PDF files to be "print optimised". That is, they are better printed out than read on screen. Screen resolutions vary and reading on screen is generally hard on the eyes. Print out the books on your printer. If the book contains graphics and images, then set your printer to print them at a high resolution, say 600 dpi (dots per inch) or higher. You may have to test your printer/page size settings to achieve the best result. We are confident that all files will view easily on screen but we have no control over individual computer - printer set-ups.

How to Download a PDF Book to Your Computer

Double click the PDF file as indicated above. When the first page eventually appears on screen look for the Adobe Acrobat Reader toolbar which will be directly above the first page text as in the example below:

To save to your computer, click the small black floppy disk icon and follow the instructions. If this tool bar doesn't appear, you may have to use the F8 function key to toggle the toolbar on and off.
