Email
Security
Do NOT send
personal details (such as your credit card details) to anyone by open
email. As an email goes through various points on the Internet called
nodes (basically the computers used by ISP's all over the world) an email
message leaves a copy of itself at each place, copies which can stay there
for years. If you ever want to send a secure message use http://www.ziplip.com
General
Credit Card Scam Warning for Buyers
If a company
has a genuine credit card facility, as we do, then you can take this as
an assurance that the banks view the company favourably and that they
have few disputes of which all are honourably rectified. Beware of companies
offering credit card facilities that ask you to organise a credit card
cheque (this is like a banker's draft but raised by the credit
card company). This often indicates that the company concerned does NOT
have the requirements necessary to have their own facility. Also ignore
any statement about credit card systems being too expensive. Any decent
company can accept credit card charges by adding a small increase in their
sales price. Credit card cheques do NOT give you the assurance
or protection offered by genuine merchant account transactions.
Computer
Security Software
Essential:
- Good
anti-virus software
Examples: McAfee.com; Sophos.com; Norton. Our choice: www.grisoft.com
- Firewall
software
The best is probably ZoneAlarm from http://www.zonelabs.com
(FREE)
- PGP
Encryption
Version 6.5.1 is free and also contains PGP Disk, which allows you to
create a virtual hard drive and password protect it. PGPfreeware651int.exe
is the name of the installation file on our CD. Downloadable from www.instantbookstore.com/downloads/PGPfreeware651int.exe
File
size: 8 Mb.
Platform: Windows up to
98 edition.
(Early morning download recommended)
For latest
versions of PGP, go to http://www.pgpi.org.
Provided you use a reasonably long password containing letters (caps
mixed with lowercase) as well as numbers (e.g. HKdun256euJd4569) then
this system is virtually unbreakable.
Highly Recommended:
- BoClean
Cheap and simple anti-Trojan software from http://www.nsclean.com.
You can set up to monitor permanently or at start-up (preferred to avoid
clashes with other permanent anti-virus software)
- Ad-Aware
FREE trial software from http://www.lavasoftUSA.com
that clears out stealth advertising programs that have been placed on
your system unknowingly as you surf the Internet. These are not viruses
but can collect information useful for advertisers who then send you
junk mail.
Find
out what others already know about you
For example,
did you know that all your password and unlock codes are easily accessible?
If you are shocked by that fact, here are some resources to assist you
in doing something about it.
This site will do an on-line test to show you how easy, or hard, it
is to access your particular computer.
This site does a series of very detailed scans in which it tries to
access your computer in the same way that hackers can.
